I used to have a really hard time explaining to students why stealing is wrong and why tattling isn’t always the best thing but after finding Julia’s books we can easily have the conversation. Her books teach students to be problem solvers. I've even learned some great advice. I sure wish I was taught these lessons in my elementary years. In the past, I would call parents if I had issues with interrupting, rudeness, or impulsivity. Now I read all of Julia’s stories in class and even recommend them to parents. Her books are one of my favorite resources as a teacher. I always love when new books are released because the kids LOVE them. When parents ask me for advice on certain life skills I always tell them about my wonderful collection of books. Julia has books for TONS of life skills and lessons such as teasing, cliques, making friends, fears, respect, personal space, interrupting, stealing, depression, divorce and many more. I can’t tell you my favorites because each story is fabulous. I can tell you I’ve never read one of her stories that I didn’t like.
The best part …ALL of the stories are filled with wonderful ideas and they are simple enough for students relate to the characters. They really speak to the children. Children really understand the lesson being taught and they can start implementing her tips that SAME day.

Thanks for the Feedback- RJ learns what feedback is all about. This story is about learning to responding to feedback, accepting positive feedback, and learning to interpret and grow from negative feedback.
Peer Pressure Gauge- Story about Norbert’s internal deliberation as he struggles with whether or not to give into the pressure.
Ricky Sticky Fingers- This story teaches children the concept of ownership and how it feels when someone doesn’t respect what is yours.

ReplyDeleteI too have Tattle Tale and love it. I browsed through her books extensively on Amazon and found many I wanted to add to my collection but the cost was prohibitive. I think every teacher has situations that arise that we'd love a good book to help us get the message across!

I LOVE Julia's books! I use them both in my classroom and in counseling. My favorites are The Tattle Tongue, My Mouth is a Volcano, and The Worst Day of My Life Ever. I love using The Tattle Tongue at the beginning of the year to explain tattling vs. telling-- my students refer to the book all year! I have not heard of Thanks for the Feedback-- sounds wonderful! ReplyDeleteI heard her speak twice while in college. Her presentations are great and I love her books. I was a substitute during the first few days of school and the teacher had me read a different book each day. I loved the tattle tongue and referred to it for the rest of the week to help them tell the difference between tattling and warning.

ReplyDeleteI love her books! I had no idea she has so many! My mouth is a volcano is such a fun book, but totally related at the same time for many of my students. We've had some other tough issues come up around gender and sexuality. Our school has a great program now that provides us with children's literature to help educate our students in an age appropriate way. I'd love to have any of the books being give away as I can think of specific students that these books would help!
ReplyDeleteI love My Mouth is a Volcano and Tattle Tongue. Using Julia's books have helped me a lot because I, too, had a hard time explaining why certain things were not okay. It's not nice or polite was never enough. I didn't realize Julia had so many. I am going to have to purchase way more than I should now! :)

ReplyDeleteI unfortunately had to share the sad news that one of our classmate's sister had passed away. It was such a hard thing to talk about! Wish I had thought about reading one of these books. I have heard of a few, but didn't realize she had so many.

ReplyDeleteI have a few of these books but had no idea how many Julia had! Wow! I've definitely had situations that were hard to explain to students. Two years ago was the worst...when a student's mother died unexpectedly. So sad.
